The system monitors engine rpm and regulates the amount of hydraulic oil flow to the feed roller motor, based on the engine speed. "It''s an engine-load sensing device," said Brent Bartels, project engineer at Vermeer. "AS wood is fed into the cutting mechanism, that slows the cutter disc down, which loads the engine down so the engine speed is slowing down. If that were to continue, the engine would eventually stall. In skid-steer mode, the A220 loader can counter rotate, meaning it can basically turn 360[degrees] within its own length. In all-wheel steer, the machine has an inside turning circle of roughly 10 ft. "It''s still pretty maneuverable in all-wheel steer," said Fitzgerald. "But if you do actually need to stop and turn 90[degrees], you change it into skid-steer mode and you''re off and running."The standard machine has a maximum travel speed of 6.2 mph, while a two-speed option takes that up to 12.4 mph. Like its 863 ancestor, it packs a lot of power into a compact envelope (135.4 in. long, 82.3 in high and 74.2 in. wide), with a rated operating capacity of 2200 lb. and a tipping load is 4400 lb. Operating weight is 7745 lb. "That''s about 700 lb. more than an 863 skid-steer loader because of the added componentry," Fitzgerald said. "But it has a 2200 lb. capacity instead of the 1900 lb. that we have in the 863." Though light in weight, Airbor magnetic drill has a powerful 1.6-hp air motor and 1,600-lb magnetic holding strength. With its extra rack, stroke length is extended to 10 1/4 in. Annular cutter capacity is up to 2 1/16 in. diam. Geared chuck adapter converts the unit to a standard drill press. The Slugger Air Force pneumatic drill, at 24 lbs, 6 1/4" high, is useful for confined area drilling. The drill''s features include a permanent magnet that turns on or off by air power, a cutter capacity of up to 1 1/16" diameter x 3/4" depth and the ability to use ShortSlugger cutters and frame cutters.
