The typical Avalon autoette is a one-cylinder, 12-horsepower, gas-fueled cart that does about 12 miles per hour. By tweaking the engine you can milk a zippy 18 mph from it. The town''s speed limit is only 20, so you don''t need much more zip than that. An autoette gets about 50 mpg from its six-gallon gas tank (unleaded regular, $2.50 a gallon out here), although all this is a bit hard to confirm since carts don''t have speedometers or odometers. Most are made by Yamaha, and most are white.John Regalado runs the town''s Yamaha dealership. Because the city limits the number of carts, Regalado doesn''t sell many new ones; service is where the money is. His "showroom" is a two-stall repair garage with a couple of newish models parked out front. Compactly built, with California beach-boy looks, Regalado''s also a city councilman and the mayor pro tem. He kindly wipes the cart grease from his palms before shaking hands. "Kids here look forward to getting golf carts like mainland kids wait to buy cars," he says. "They go cruising after school and scoot out to Buena Vista Point to party at night. You know, teen things."

Contamination often stems from poor storage and is not a reflection on the quality of the fuel itself.Nearly all the tanks we studied are 20 years or more in age; half are over 30 years old. All the tanks have filters, but a third of them were dirty or clogged and needed replacement.Similar results in NebraskaWhile not part of our study, a tank cleaning program offered by Central Farmers Co-op in O''Neil, Nebraska, found similar results. "We''ve cleaned over 100 fuel tanks and have seen some shocking things," says assistant fuel manager Lyle Harvey.

Though light in weight, Airbor magnetic drill has a powerful 1.6-hp air motor and 1,600-lb magnetic holding strength. With its extra rack, stroke length is extended to 10 1/4 in. Annular cutter capacity is up to 2 1/16 in. diam. Geared chuck adapter converts the unit to a standard drill press. The Slugger Air Force pneumatic drill, at 24 lbs, 6 1/4" high, is useful for confined area drilling. The drill''s features include a permanent magnet that turns on or off by air power, a cutter capacity of up to 1 1/16" diameter x 3/4" depth and the ability to use ShortSlugger cutters and frame cutters. These cutters'' geometry allows the operator to drill multi-layered truck frames in a single pass.
