"MTBE dissolves readily in water, moves rapidly in the soil and resists microbial decomposition," says Jon Hinch, a lawyer with Lewis Saul & Associates, a New York law firm that has filed numerous class-action suits on behalf of well owners. "MTBE is 28 times more soluble than benzene. Even a minor spill can be a big threat to groundwater supplies." For example, Hinch sites his first client, a rural property owner in Maine. "An SUV went off the road and came to rest near his well, where 10 gallons of gasoline spilled on the ground. MTBE in that fuel made its way into the ground and eventually contaminated the water supply for 12 families," he says.
